Unlike syringing which puts excessive pressure on the eardrum, increasing the risk of eardrum perforation or irritation, micro-suction means wax is safely removed under the direct visualisation of your ear canal using a microscope or headset.

After we have taken a full medical history from you, we will examine your ears. We will then remove wax from your ears using the safest and most appropriate method/s which may include Micro-suction, the use of instrumentation, or a combination of both.

Instrumentation

The instruments (sterile reusable curettes, loops, hooks and/or forceps) are carefully inserted into the ear canal to clear the ear of debris or wax while being viewed closely through magnifying Loupes.

  • Your Audiologist has undertaken training in debris and wax removal and will use best-practice procedures to minimize any risk of harm.
  • Complications are rare.
  • However, even when performed with the utmost care, there is a small risk of damage or infection to the skin of the ear canal or eardrum.
  • The procedures of micro-suction can be a little bit noisy and may cause a temporary shift in your hearing or start/aggravate any existing tinnitus.
  • Slight discomfort may be experienced if wax is hard and impacted, if you have naturally sensitive ears, if you have an active outer ear infection, or surfer’s ear (tiny bony growths in the outer ear canal due to prolonged exposure to cold water and air).
  • There is a small risk of temporary dizziness or discomfort.
  • It is important to remain still during the procedure as sudden movement may increase the risk of ear drum perforation or bleeding in the canal.
  • Where it is not possible to remove hard and impacted wax, you may be advised to use further treatment with olive oil or almond oil and to book a follow up visit after the wax has softened sufficiently.
  • Please AVOID using ‘Waxol’, ‘Cerumol’ or any other over the counter softening treatment before attending your Micro-suction appointment, as this often makes the wax too soft and the experience less comfortable for you.

Micro-suction

A suction unit will be used to gently clear a foreign body, debris or wax from the ear canal while being viewed through magnifying Loupes. The suction unit (which is generally used in hospitals and theatres to remove fluids from the airway or respiratory system) has been adapted for wax micro-suctioning.
